N.D. Canola and Alfalfa Hay Forecasts Up from 2017

Based on October 1 conditions, North Dakota's 2018 corn production is forecast at 426 million bushels, down 5 percent from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 2.92 million acres, is down 10 percent from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 146 bushels per acre, up 7 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is forecast at 247 million bushels, up 1 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 6.85 million acres, is 3 percent below 2017. Yield is forecast at 36 bushels per acre, up 1.5 bushels from last year.

Dry edible bean production is forecast at 11.1 million hundredweight, down 11 percent from 2017. Area for harvest, at 615,000 acres, is down 10 percent from last year. Yield is estimated at 1,800 pounds per acre, down 10 pounds per acre from last year.

Sugarbeet production is forecast at 6.43 million tons, down slightly from 2017. Area for harvest, at 210,000 acres, is down 1 percent from last year. Yield is estimated at 30.6 tons per acre, up 0.2 ton per acre from a year ago.

All sunflower production is forecast at 674 million pounds, down 3 percent from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 424,000 acres, is up 1,000 acres from 2017. Yield is forecast at 1,591 pounds per acre, down 45 pounds per acre from a year ago. Of the acres for harvest, non-oil sunflowers account for a record low 38,000 acres and oil sunflowers account for 386,000 acres.

Canola production is forecast at a record 3.03 billion pounds, up 19 percent from last year. Acreage for harvest, at a record 1.58 million acres, is up 1 percent from 2017. Yield is forecast at a record 1,920 pounds per acre, up 290 pounds per acre from a year ago.

Alfalfa hay production, at 2.70 million tons, is up 43 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.50 million acres, is up 11 percent from a year ago. Yield of 1.80 tons per acre, is up 0.4 ton from 2017. All other hay production, at 2.24 million tons, is up 33 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.40 million acres, is up 8 percent from a year ago. Yield of 1.60 tons per acre, is up 0.3 ton from 2017.
