Lecture to Focus on Local Government Consolidation
North Dakota Ag Connection - 10/15/2019

NDSU is scheduled to host a Capitalism and Society lecture presented by Joshua Hall, director of the Center for Free Enterprise and professor of economics at West Virginia University, on Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the Richard H. Barry Hall auditorium.

The event is free and open to the public. It is co-hosted by the NDSU Center for the Study of Public Choice and Private Enterprise and the Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth. After the lecture, there will be a short session for questions and answers, followed by pizza and refreshments.

Hall's lecture will examine the consolidation of local government services for economic development purposes. Local government consolidation is frequently put forward as a way to drive economic development by making government more efficient. In this talk, Hall provides an overview of the theory and evidence regarding the effects of government consolidation and provides lessons for would-be policy entrepreneurs.

Hall's research interests include state and local public finance, economic freedom and entrepreneurship. He is a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute and co-author of the "Economic Freedom of the World" annual report.

"I look forward to hearing his insights," said Jeremy Jackson, director of the Center for the Study of Public Choice and Private Enterprise. "Joshua Hall is a prolific scholar, and there is a lot our communities can learn from his studies on local government."

The Capitalism and Society Lecture Series invites dialogue between researchers, students and community members about institutions and policies that encourage and enhance human well-being.
