Former National Park Service Superintendent to Give NDSU Talk

Gerard Baker, former National Park Service Head of Indian Relations, is set to give a presentation at NDSU on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in Minard Hall, room 230.

The talk, titled "Yellow Wolf: A National Park Service Superintendent's Story," is open to the public.

Gerard Baker is a Hidatsa-Mandan tribal member, who grew up on North Dakota's Fort Berthold Reservation. His 33-year career with the National Park Service included serving as superintendent of Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument, Chickasaw National Recreation Area, Lewis and Clark Historic Trail and Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. He retired in 2010.

"The lecture will feature Mr. Baker's perspectives on incorporating Native American voices into national parks, monuments and historic sites," said Mark Harvey, professor and head of the Department of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies. "He'll also discuss how the National Park Service has changed its interpretive programs and exhibits to incorporate Native American histories and cultures."
