North Dakota Ag Connection - 03/22/2018

Senator John Hoeven, chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has awarded two grants totaling $157,539 to support AmeriCorps VISTA members in North Dakota. The members will work on a full-time basis for one-year, undertaking service projects on behalf of the grantees. The funds are distributed as follows:

- Spirit Lake Tribe -- $107,057 to improve health outcomes and decrease methamphetamine use and suicide among tribal members through outreach and education programs.

- North Dakota STEM Network -- $50,482 to develop and implement an accessible database of STEM opportunities for all students in North Dakota, particularly students from remote, rural and disadvantaged communities.

"AmeriCorps members work in a wide variety of capacities to serve our communities," said Hoeven. "Today's funds will address serious health needs in Spirit Lake, including substance abuse and suicide, while also helping students across the state to better leverage their degrees and find good job opportunities."
