Apps Still Open for State Board of Higher Education
North Dakota Ag Connection - 03/22/2018

Gov. Doug Burgum Wednesday encouraged North Dakotans to consider applying for two openings on the State Board of Higher Education, which sets policy for the North Dakota University System and oversees the state's 11 public colleges and universities.

"Serving on the Board is an incredible honor and a tremendous opportunity to positively impact the direction of higher education in North Dakota," Burgum said. "We're seeking applicants with strong leadership and communication skills and a passion for ensuring students graduate from college well-prepared for a 21st century economy."

Individuals interested in serving on the board must submit a completed application form, resume and letters of recommendation by 5 p.m. April 2. The materials should be emailed to the State Superintendent's executive assistant, Patty Carmichael, at pcarmichael@nd.gov, or mailed to State Superintendent, Department of Public Instruction, 600 E. Boulevard Ave., Dept. 201, Bismarck, N.D., 58505.

State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler chairs the five-member committee that nominates Board of Higher Education applicants. Nominees are forwarded to the governor, who will appoint the two board members contingent on confirmation by the state Senate.

The two open positions carry four-year terms, which begin July 1. The two seats are currently held by Kevin Melicher of Fargo and Mike Ness of Hazen. Each is eligible to be reappointed to a second four-year term on the board.

The Board of Higher Education has eight voting members appointed by the governor, including a student member, and two non-voting members who represent University System faculty and staff. The board meets monthly and oversees the system's 11 public colleges and universities.
