North Dakota Ag Connection - 04/29/2016

Gov. Jack Dalrymple Thursday announced that Darian Colgrove of Grand Forks Central High School and Tai Mosley of Red River High School in Grand Forks have been selected by the Coalition for Conservation and Environmental Education as two of the state's most promising young scientific leaders. They will represent North Dakota as delegates at the National Youth Science Camp in West Virginia this summer. Both students excel in chemistry, math and science, have won numerous academic awards, and are involved in their school and community.

"Darian and Tai have both excelled academically and already have an impressive list of achievements to their credit as promising young scientists and future leaders," Dalrymple said. "This camp will provide them with a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with academic and corporate professionals, while broadening their knowledge and interest in science and the environment. We are proud to have them represent our state at the Youth Science Camp this summer."

Colgrove has a +4.0 weighted grade point average for taking difficult and advanced courses, including chemistry, physics, biology, engineering and psychology. He plans to major in astrophysics. Colgrove is a National Merit Scholarship finalist; recipient of the Bausch and Lomb "Honorary Science" award, "AP Scholar" award, AP Biology "Student of the Year" award, and GFC Renaissance "Student of the Quarter" award; and is a member of the National Honor Society and a National Society of High School Scholars "Ambassador." He has competed in numerous regional and state science fairs, bowls and math competitions, and recently was the InSPIRESS Project Manager at the University of Alabama (Huntsville) in a NASA-sponsored engineering competition focused on designing a payload to go to Titan. He is captain of the varsity track team and science bowl, and is a member of the debate team and the Grand Forks Youth Commission.

Mosley has a +3.83 weighted grade point average for taking some of the most difficult and advanced courses her school has to offer. Her long-term goal is to become a surgeon and will major in biology before going into pre-medicine. She graduated from the Experimental Science Program at the North Dakota Governor's School last summer. Her research project was Nuclear-Targeted, Redox-Sensitive Polymersomes: New Smart Drug Delivery Vehicles of small metal spheres containing cancer medications to target a specific area of the body and programmed to detonate on command. Mosley is a National Honor Society member and U.S. Presidential Scholars Program candidate. She is a member of the student council and active in extracurricular activities in her school, community and church. She is a School to Career Intern with Altru Health System in Grand Forks and has made numerous volunteer mission trips to South Dakota, Colorado and Wyoming.

Established in 1963 as part of West Virginia's centennial celebration, the National Youth Science Camp is an annual summer forum where two delegates representing each state exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from academic and corporate worlds. Lectures and hands-on research projects are presented by scientists from across the United States who work on some of the most notable topics in science today. Delegates to the camp are challenged to explore new areas in the biological and physical sciences, art and music, and will have an opportunity to present seminars covering their own areas of research and interest.

The National Youth Science Camp's diverse academic program is complemented by an outdoor recreation program that offers backpacking, caving, rock climbing, mountain biking and kayaking. Colgrove and Mosley were selected from several student applicants from across North Dakota.
