NDWC Commemorates Anniversaries in Japan, Taiwan
North Dakota Ag Connection - 05/02/2016

North Dakota Wheat Commission representatives, along with USW staff and representatives from wheat commissions in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington were in Japan and Taiwan in April commemorating longstanding business relationships with two of the largest hard red spring wheat (HRS) buyers.

2016 marks 60 years of doing business with Japan, and over these six decades, the Japanese wheat market has grown into the single largest export customer for HRS produced in North Dakota and the surrounding region. On average, Japan purchases nearly 48 million bushels of HRS each year. In the early years, the NDWC worked to overcome unduly high rail freight rates, a hurdle that threatened the market. Japan continues to be a premium quality market and the NDWC helps facilitate the training and education of quality and marketing staff from leading Japanese milling companies at NDSU and regularly hosts trade teams to present quality and production information and showcase the NDSU breeding and quality programs.

North Dakota wheat producers have enjoyed a 50 year relationship with the people of Taiwan, the Taiwan Flour Millers Association, and a valuable wheat trade partnership. Over the past five decades, U.S. exports of HRS have reached an average of 22 million bushels per year, consistently making Taiwan the third largest market for high quality HRS. The strong market share U.S. HRS has maintained in the market, even in the face of strong competition, is a testament to the long-standing relationship between the Taiwan milling industry and North Dakota and U.S. producers.
