UMN Morris Offers New Sustainability Leadership Minor
North Dakota Ag Connection - 04/08/2019

The University of Minnesota Morris announced a new minor in Sustainability Leadership. The minor is part of UMN Morris's Sustainability Leaders for the Future program, which prepares students to lead the way in solving the world's environmental, social, and economic challenges.

The Sustainability Leadership minor will help students from any major develop the skills they need to grow as sustainability leaders in their personal and professional lives. The plan includes topics and activities in:

- Environmental Problems and Public Policy

- Communication and the Environment

- Political Ethics

- Indigenous sovereignty and federal policy

Students also take part in a workshop series on leadership skills and complete a community-engaged learning project that allows them to engage, observe, and learn in depth about sustainability challenges and solutions in their areas of interest.

To prepare students to lead in a carbon-constrained future, the new program draws on campus strengths:

- A commitment to inclusivity that has led to one of the most diverse student populations in the state of Minnesota

- Nationally recognized commitment to environmental sustainability through renewable energy infrastructure investments, policies, and initiatives

- A variety of leadership opportunities through student organizations, internships, undergraduate research projects, and community engagement

These strengths, combined with the promise of a personalized liberal arts education, make UMN Morris the place to study sustainability leadership, says Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean Janet Schrunk Ericksen.

"While working toward their degrees at UMN Morris, students such as our featured presenter at this year's Undergraduate Research Symposium can intern at the Office of Sustainability, take coursework that combines studio art and environmental science, and lead multiple student organizations--and they can live in a green dorm and study its energy use. In so many ways, this campus provides a living laboratory for sustainability leadership."

The Sustainability Leadership minor is available at UMN Morris this fall. To learn more, visit morris.umn.edu/sustainabilityleadership. The Sustainability Leaders for the Future program is sustained in part by a grant from Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies.
