June 17-20 Extension Youth Conference Has Leadership
North Dakota Ag Connection - 05/14/2019

The 2019 Extension Youth Conference will help young people "Launch into Leadership."

The June 17-20 conference at North Dakota State University in Fargo is open to any young person who has completed seventh through 12th grade. Participants do not need to be 4-H members to attend.

"Nearly 100 youth from throughout North Dakota attend this annual event," said Sue Quamme, 4-H youth development specialist for youth leadership and civic engagement. The registration deadline is June 4, and space is filling up fast.

"The conference is a fun and exciting way for North Dakota youth to develop leadership skills, learn about career paths and form partnerships and friendships with youth from across the state, volunteers and Extension staff," Quamme says.

The 2019 theme of "Launch into Leadership" focuses on developing leadership and problem-solving skills. The program features two exciting sessions, Quamme said. The communication workshop will have teens learning from and laughing with each other, and taking home valuable skills.

During the Food Truck Festival, youth will be challenged to create a food truck with ingredients from North Dakota farms. This event will develop problem-solving skills, create an awareness of where our food comes from and have the fun of an exciting challenge. Greg Benz, NDSU Extension agent in Dunn County, will share the many hats that an Extension agent, farmer, veteran, firefighter and small-town community member wears.

Quamme said, "The fun doesn't end there as youth will participate in exciting breakout sessions and a service project, and get dressed up for a banquet and dance. And there is always so much more fun with old and new friends."

The $225 registration fee includes all meals from Monday evening through Thursday lunch, overnight housing, an event T-shirt and a group photograph in addition to all the sessions.

Youth who want more information or are interested in attending the conference should contact their local Extension office or the Center for 4-H Youth Development at 701-231-7251 or NDSU.4-H@ndsu.edu. Also, they may check out the video on Instagram at @ND4hambie. Youth who are 4-H members should register through 4-H online.
