Over $750,000 to Help North Dakota's Disadvantaged Students
North Dakota Ag Connection - 07/25/2016
Senator John Hoeven, who serves on the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that the Department of Education has awarded a total of $754,080 to the University of North Dakota and Cankdeska Cikana Community College. The Department
of Education awarded the funds through its Talent Search program, which identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The funds are awarded as follows:
-- University of North Dakota -- $466,080 -- To provide educational services for low-income and first generation populations in remote areas of North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, including Native American reservations and other rural communities.
Specifically, the funding will address two Competitive Preference Priorities: working to prevent students from dropping out of target schools and addressing the unmet mentoring need of graduating seniors at target schools.
-- Spirit Lake Talent Search Program at Cankdeska Cikana Community College -- $288,000 -- To support services aimed at helping students complete high school or a postsecondary program. The Spirit Lake Talent Search program will also provide tutoring
and work to enhance and/or reinforce literacy skills.
"No matter where North Dakota's students are living, whether it's in our cities or the more rural parts of our state, we need to make sure that young people have access to the services they need to be successful in school," Hoeven said. "In doing so, they will be
able to participate in the workforce, have rewarding careers and be able to provide for their families. Today's grants will support efforts aimed at doing just that."
