North Dakota Corn Acreage Down 31 Percent

North Dakota producers planted 6.00 million acres of other spring wheat in 2020, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 10% from a year ago. Other spring wheat to be harvested for grain is estimated at 5.85 million acres, down 2% from last year.
Durum wheat is estimated at 790,000 acres, up 10% from a year earlier. Harvested area is expected to total 770,000 acres, up 28% from last year. Winter wheat planted last fall totaled 40,000 acres, down 53% from last year. Harvested area is expected to total 35,000 acres, down 50% from last year.
Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 6.00 million acres, up 7% from last year. Of these, 94% were planted with genetically modified, herbicide resistant seed, down 1 percentage point from 2019. Producers expect to harvest 5.95 million acres, up 10% from a year ago.
Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 2.40 million acres this year, down 31% from 2019.
Of the total acres, 91% were planted with biotechnology varieties, down 5 percentage points from 2019. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 2.20 million acres, down 30% from a
year ago.
Barley producers planted 550,000 acres, down 5% from last year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 425,000 acres, down 4% from a year ago.
Oats planted for all purposes is estimated at 400,000 acres, up 13% from last year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 125,000 acres, up 9% from last year.
Rye planted for all purposes is estimated at 75,000 acres, down 12% from last year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 50,000 acres, down 12% from last year.
Canola planted acreage is estimated at 1.55 million acres, down 9% from last year. Area to be harvested is estimated at 1.53 million acres, down 5% from a year ago.
Oil sunflower planted area is estimated at 550,000 acres, up 17% from last year. An estimated 530,000 acres is expected to be harvested, up 23% from a year ago. Non-oil sunflower planted area is estimated at 70,000 acres, up 8% from the previous year. Harvested area is estimated at 67,000 acres, up 16% from the previous year.
Flaxseed planted acreage, at 235,000 acres, is down 15% from a year ago. Area to be harvested is estimated at 220,000 acres, down 4% from last year.
Dry edible bean planted acres are estimated at 810,000, up 32% from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 790,000 acres, up 44% from a year ago.
All chickpea planted acres is estimated at 20,000 acres, down 51% from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 19,100 acres, up 1% from last year. Small and large chickpea acreages were withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual operators.
Dry edible pea planted acres is estimated at 325,000, down 24% from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 315,000 acres, down 23% from a year ago.
Lentil planted area is estimated at 85,000 acres, down 11% from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 80,000 acres, down 1% from a year ago.
Sugarbeet planted acres, at 214,000, are up 1% from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 211,000 acres, up 24% from the previous year.
Potato planted acreage is estimated at 65,000 acres, down 11% from last year and a record low. Harvested area is estimated at 62,000, up 7% from a year ago. Percent planted by type totals 45% Russet, 28% white, 24% red, and 3% yellow.
Alfalfa acreage to be harvested for dry hay is estimated at 1.45 million acres, up 19% from last year. Other hay acreage to be cut for dry hay is estimated at 1.05 million acres, down 13% from a year ago.
The estimates of planted and harvested acreages in this news release are based primarily on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of June.
