Rain Stalls North Dakota Fall Harvest

For the week ending Sunday, temperatures ranged from two to six degrees above normal across a majority of the State, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Producers were able to make good progress harvesting crops during the beginning of the week when conditions were drier. However, harvest activities were stalled across much of North Dakota through the weekend due to rainfall. Livestock producers were busy weaning calves and hauling hay to winter feeding areas. There were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 2 percent very short, 11 short, 71 adequate, and 16 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 4 percent very short, 11 short, 71 adequate, and 14 surplus.

Durum wheat harvested was 92 percent, near 95 last year, but ahead of 87 for the five-year average.

Corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 17 fair, 63 good, and 16 excellent. Corn dented was 95 percent, equal to last year, and near 93 average. Mature was 59 percent, ahead of 43 last year and 47 average. Harvested was 3 percent, near 2 last year and 6 average. Soybeans condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 19 fair, 60 good, and 14 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 87 percent, behind 92 last year, and near 89 average. Harvested was 12 percent, behind 26 last year and 21 average.

Canola harvested was 94 percent, near 92 both last year and average.

Sunflowers condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 23 fair, 65 good, and 6 excellent. Sunflowers ray flowers dried was 95 percent, equal to last year, and near 94 average. Bracts turning yellow was 83 percent, near 85 last year, but ahead of 76 average. Bracts turning brown was 53 percent, behind 58 last year, but ahead of 43 average.

Flaxseed harvested was 92 percent, near 91 last year, and ahead of 77 average.

Dry edible beans condition rated 9 percent very poor, 10 poor, 28 fair, 43 good, and 10 excellent. Dry edible beans dropping leaves was 97 percent, equal to both last year and average. Harvested was 57 percent, well behind 83 last year, and near 60 average.

Potatoes condition rated 17 percent very poor, 22 poor, 28 fair, 27 good, and 6 excellent. Potato vines dry was 92 percent, equal to last year, and ahead of 87 average. Harvested was 28 percent, well behind 51 last year, and behind 37 average.

Alfalfa hay second cutting was 95 percent complete.

Sugarbeets condition rated 9 percent very poor, 9 poor, 22 fair, 46 good, and 14 excellent. Sugarbeets harvested was 12 percent, near 16 last year, but equal to average.

Lentils harvested was 96 percent, near 97 last year, but ahead of 89 average.

Winter wheat planted was 53 percent, behind 66 last year. Emerged was 12 percent, near 11 last year.

Pasture and range conditions rated 5 percent very poor, 11 poor, 28 fair, 51 good, and 5 excellent. Stock water supplies rated 5 percent very short, 18 short, 74 adequate, and 3 surplus.
